The plane’s smooth window

We long for peace but
Shout in rage at cars that cut
Us off in traffic

Schoolyard taunts and jeers
Can’t silence her truth-telling
She knows she matters

Bandages came off
Scorched eyes could see again but
Ears’ eyes were muted

Dead before my birth
Still his insistent voice calls
Down the years to me

Bring you rounded to my hand
From the river’s grasp

Pressed into sandstone
The lonely grains recall their
Rock-born history

Earth’s dark womb opens
Glittering rock is pulled forth
We forget its age

You tossed stones at dawn
Into the lake’s dark water
The ripples don’t end

We walk on the earth
The ground feels firm beneath us
Years pass – mountains heave

Dreaming of Asia
I breathe air filled with spices
But then wake at home

Lemon slice in mouth
Child’s startled eyes grow wider
Sharpness blooms on tongue

Who knows what vistas
Pass trainside unseen at night
While passengers dream

Driving through Utah
We turn awe-struck faces toward
Earth’s unearthly hues

Neophyte on skis
Too unskilled to turn aside
Moguls toss me wide
