Birds of Paradise were never a favorite of mine – I used to find them supremely awkward and ugly. Turns out I just wasn’t looking closely enough!

Hannah over at Bittersweet is holding an exciting contest for photographers. Hurry on over if you’d like to participate – the contest ends November 30th! The instructions are to post a series of photos – they can tell a story or not, they can be of one subject or many, but must be a series of at least three shots – and the winner, as chosen by Hannah, will be sent a brand new Kodak EasyShare printer!

Georgeous photos. The water on the “skin” makes me want to dive in. Really breathtaking.
Incredibly sensual! Very Georgia O’Keefe and very lovley.

[...] just takes the right point of view to find beauty in even the most unappealing plants, as Catherine finds out first hand. I would definitely have to agree on this one- Those pictures [...]
Congrats on your win, indeed! Those are some amazing pix. Do you mind my asking what camera you use? I’m in the market for a new one. I’d also like to borrow your eye while I’m at it.
Thank you so much, everyone!
Lucia, I have a Nikon D70s digital SLR. These photos were shot with my very old 35-105 zoom lens (from my film Nikon days) reverse mounted on the camera with a special reversing ring (much more affordable than buying a special lens for those of us with modest budgets) which allows you to take super close-up macro shots. I had a wonderful time playing with this technique – the birds of paradise were a perfect subject for experimenting with macros.
Wonderful photos! I’ve always liked Bird of Paradise flowers, flamboyant and colourful!
These are astounding. (I missed them in November!)
Enjoy your wintering rest this solstice. I look forward to visiting again in the new year.
wow. my mom always did watercolors of birds of paradise which drove me crazy, but your macro shots reveal a new world of texture and color, thank you.
